About Luerssen Australia

Luerssen Australia is a subsidiary of NVL Group. NVL stands for Naval Vessels Lürssen and is an independent, privately owned group of renowned Northern German shipyards and related companies, formerly known as Lürssen Defence.

The group is headquartered in Bremen, Germany, and has a strong heritage. Together, the shipyards of NVL Group have completed more than 1,000 naval and coastguard vessels since their beginnings in the late 1870s and have built and repaired ships for both the German Navy and fleets in over 50 countries. In addition to the design and manufacture of naval vessels and coastguard vessels, NVL Group also provides extensive lifetime support through NVL Services.

In May 2017, in pursuit of the SEA 1180 contract and regional export opportunities, NVL Group predecessor Lürssen founded a subsidiary company, Luerssen Australia. The company supports Australia’s national sovereign shipbuilding strategy and operates from the Australian Marine Complex in Henderson, Western Australia.

ABOUT SEA 1180

After an extensive, competitive evaluation process and request for tender evaluation (RFT) spanning approximately two years, NVL Group’s predecessor Lürssen had the honour of being selected as the preferred prime contractor and designer for the SEA 1180 Offshore Patrol Vessel programme. The contract has been signed in the name of its subsidiary, Luerssen Australia. In a major boost for Australian manufacturing, Luerssen Australia is now the contracted vessel designer and builder for the programme. In cooperation with several Australian partners and with knowledge transfer from the NVL Group headquarters, Luerssen Australia is leading a fully Australian build team to commence construction of the first of two vessels, which are currently being built in Osborne, SA. A further ten vessels will be built in Henderson, WA.

FIRST OF CLASS – NUSHIP ARAFURA

In a major milestone for the Royal Australian Navy, the first of the new Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels, NUSHIP Arafura, has been officially launched in Osborne, South Australia. The event was attended by the Governor of South Australia, Premier of South Australia, Minister for Defence and the Chief of the Royal Australian Navy. Chief Executive Officer of Luerssen Australia, Jens Nielsen, said it was a proud day for the company after starting construction of the vessel in 2018.
